Seth Lakeman

Unusual, fresh folk music inspired by the legends of the West Country.

Seth Lakeman

Brought up in a musical family in Plymouth, Seth grew up surrounded by music. His songs are beautiful and inspiring.

Seth first became known when he played as part of the Lakeman Brothers. Then, with Kate Rusby and Kathryn Roberts, he formed folk band Equation. Cara Dillon later replaced Kate Rusby.

In 2001, Seth began playing as part of Cara Dillon's band. I remember first seeing them as part of the BBC Glastonbury coverage, where they did a fantastic cover of "Black is the Colour".

Since then Seth has released two solo albums - the Punchbowl, and Kitty Jay. The latter has been nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music awards. It's a haunting blend of folk music, true stories and legends, inspired by Dartmoor where Seth Lakeman grew up. WHen I first got the album I remember driving up to the moors with three other mates, and Kitty Jay just happened to be in the CD player. It's really an amazing album to listen to. Highly recommended.

You can read my article on the South West music scene, which features a brief interview with Seth Lakeman and Mark Chadwick from the Levellers.
